يتناول هذا الكتاب بالبحث والدراسة شخصية علمية وأدبية وثقافية جزائرية مرموقة ظهرت خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين الميلادي، وكان لها أثرها البارز في النهضة الثقافية الحديثة في الجزائر، وهي شخصية محمد بن أبي شنب التي اجتمعت لها صفات الكاتب واللغوي والمؤرخ والمترجم والمحقق والشاعر، وقد وظف صاحبها هذه المواهب كلها في إثراء الحركة الثقافية وبعث النهضة العربية الحديثة في الجزائر، فكان وجها لامعا من وجوهها.
لقد حاول هذا الكتاب أن يقف عند أهم المحطات التي ميّزت سيرة هذا الرجل ورسمت معالم حياته، من خلال التعرف إلى سيرته الذاتية، ومقاربة جهوده الإبداعية، ودراساته الأدبية والنقدية، وإنجازاته اللغوية، وإسهاماته التاريخية، وآثاره في تحقيق التراث والترجمة والدراسات الاستشراقية، وعرض بعض النماذج من شعره، ورسائله، ومقالاته، ومحاضراته، ومقدمات كتبه، وبعض كتاباته بدائرة المعارف الإسلامية.
